About Shrinagar

The historic town of Srinagar is cradled on the pristine banks of Alaknanda River. It is seated at an average elevation of 560 metres above sea level. The pristine town of Srinagar is an important major economic, cultural and educational centre in garhwal region. It is the largest town in the Garhwal Hills. Srinagar came into limelight after becoming the capital of Garhwal Kingdom. Being placed in central Garhwal at a moderate height, it is an important Valley Bazar in the hills. It has a number of temples i.e. Dhari Devi, Kamleshwar Mahadev, Rudranath, Koteshwar mahadev,  and monuments and places for tourists  like Chopta ( mini sitzerland), velley of flower, auli, Kedarnath Dham and Badrinath dham, Deoria Tal, Himalayan peak, to stay and visit.

For centuries, Srinagar has the Capital of the Garhwal Kingdom until the arrival of the British. Srinagar received its name from Sri Yantra, a mythical giant rock so evil that whoever set their eyes on it would immediately die. The rock was believed to have taken as many as thousand lives before Adi Sankaracharya, in the 8th century AD, as a part of an undertaking aimed to rejuvenate the Hindu religion across India, visited Srinagar and turned the Sri Yantra upside down and hurled it into the nearby river Alaknanda. To this day, this rock is believed to be lying docile in the underbelly of the river. That area is now known as Sri Yantra Tapu.

    On the banks of Alaknanda river, the holy temple of Goddess Dhari Devi is located between Srinagar and Rudraprayag on Badrinath Road. Dhari Devi Temple diety is Maa Dhari Devi.

    Now relocated from 20 meter high rock to man made structure in 2013, Dhari Devi Temple is the centre of faith for the people of Garhwal.

  • Kamleshwar Temple

    Kamleshwar Mahadev Temple is one of popular Shiva Temples of Garhwal Region. It is one of the five Maheshwar Pith’s of Himalayas according to Kedarkhand.

    The temple is located in Srinagar Town near its main market. It is one of oldest temples of Uttrakhand and a divine and serene Pilgrimage to pay homage to Mahadeva.
